Day 9 (August 27, 2022): Final Words

Technically, this is Day 9 of the trip, but there really is not much to say,  Our flight from Honolulu to Vancouver arrived a few minutes early, at 7AM this morning.  Customs was a breeze — people love to complain about the need to complete the ArriveCAN app before arrival, but honestly, it speeds things up a great deal.  Our flight to Toronto left exactly on time at 9AM and arrived on time at 4:30PM.  The Toronto flight was delayed 45 minutes, leaving at 6PM and arriving 9PM. (It was supposed to arrive 8:20PM.) But given the Summer 2022 travel horror stories — especially for flights transiting through Toronto — we did extremely well.

It has been 20 years since we last visited Hawaii and 24 since our first visit there.  It was definitely busier this time than we remember from the past, but August is a peak month for Hawaii.  Despite the busyness and the expense (the cost of visiting Hawaii has skyrocketed compared to our previous visits), it truly is an incredibly beautiful destination, and every island offers something different.  We loved our visit.

A special thanks to Pam for her great photography again on this trip!  And thanks to you for checking in and following our voyage.  Until next time!

Unlike the brutal flight from Vancouver to Honolulu, seated directly by the loo for six hours, we have Premium Class seats for the three Westjet flights home. The bigger seats, the meal, the quiet cabin - it all makes for a better experience.

Normally, overnight flights of a 6-7 hour duration start with a dinner an hour into the flight, and offer a small breakfast before landing.  Westjet, however, really scrimps on its Premium class offerings.  We received no dinner and just a breakfast of eggs and pancakes an hour before landing, but with no maple syrup!  Oh well, poor us.  The chocolatine pastry was decent.

Seeing the mountains upon descent into Vancouver was a comforting sign of being back in Canada.

Our Vancouver-Toronto flight departed at 9AM and arrived 4:30PM, so we assumed there would be a dinner service.  But no, another breakfast!  This time, we went with the breakfast burrito and chorizo sausage.  Ouch, was it ever spicy!  But good.  We both agreed we preferred it over the eggs and pancakes of the previous flight.  Westjet Premium does offer comfortable 2-2 seating (compared to 3-3 in the back), which is great for an overnight flight that is packed.  But overall, it’s generally not worth the extra cost.

Toronto’s downtown core is truly dense. It’s about as far away from the natural grandeur of Oahu, Big Island and Kauai as one can get.
